Things I Use

This is a non-comprehensive list of some of the things I use and like:

  • MacBook Air - I bought this in late 2020 and I absolutely love it. It’s powerful and light. The battery lasts forever. I bought the 8-Core CPU and 8-Core GPU M1 with 512 GB storage and upgraded to 16GB of unified memory.
  • Apple iPhone 12 - I got this in 2020 as well. It’s a nice phone, although I still think they are just a bit too big. I’d really like a phone that sits between the standard size and the mini. My next iPhone will be a Pro model for the cameras.
  • Garmin Forerunner 245 - I wear a Garmin GPS watch 24/7. It tracks my health and fitness, including sleep, respiration and steps. I run everyday and track each run via GPS, saved to Garmin Connect (and Strava)
  • DJI Mini 2 - it’s a toy, let’s be honest. But this little sub-250gm drone is easy to fly and takes incredible photos and videos from vantage points that would have been impossible not too many years ago.

Software and Services

  • - this is the website you are looking at now. It’s an easy way to create a simple, lightweight personal site, and also to publish blog posts and short micro-posts that also get sent to Twitter.
  • Ghost - I host my running blog/website on Ghost(Pro). Ghost is a Node.js-powered CMS that is simpler to use compared to WordPress and gives me just what I need for that site.
  • Tweetbot - my Twitter app of choice is Tweetbot from TapBots. I can’t stand the official apps. All I want is a chronological feed of my tweets, and Tweetbot delivers that.
  • Castro Podcasts - I listen to a lot of podcasts and Castro is my player of choice. It’s all about their queue and inbox system that lets me triage and organize the various episodes. There are other players out there, but Castro works better for me than any of the others.
  • Hover - of course my domains are managed at Hover. It’s the best place to find, register and manage your domains.
  • Fastmail - I’ve been a user of Fastmail email for many, many years. If you don’t have email on your own domain name, you’re making a mistake. Fastmail is great value for the money and just works.
  • 1Password - there is no better way to manage passwords, secrets and documents.
  • Flightradar24 - the best of the ADS-B flight trackers, in my opinion. I have a Business account because I feed data to FR24 from my Raspberry Pi-based ADS-B receiver.
